Yes, you absolutely can! If you properly prepare the surface, select the appropriate paint, and apply the appropriate finish, you can paint virtually anything.
This is an inexpensive method for modernizing your floor tiles that may be used if you have older ceramic tiles that you want to give the appearance of being brand new. It’s one of my all-time favorite do-it-yourself projects, for sure!
The painting of floor tiles can be done in a variety of ways. However, I’ll share mine with you:
Using wood filler or latex caulk, you may make repairs and fill in any cracks or chips in the tile. This will restore the tile’s appearance and prevent further damage.
Sand, the original tile to roughen it up and get it ready for painting so you can apply it. Sandpaper with a grit of 100 is what I use.
To remove any traces of grime and dust from the tile, use a degreasing cleanser such as this one to wash and scour the surface.
Put tape along any baseboards and trim that is close to the floor.
Paint in the style of chalk with a little brush and apply it to the grout lines and around the margins of the floor.
The remainder of the flooring should have chalk-style paint applied to it with a foam roller. It’s possible that one layer of paint will be sufficient, but always be prepared to apply a second one if necessary.
After the paint has had time to dry, you may embellish it with a design by using a stencil and chalk-style paint in a contrasting color.
When applying paint using a stencil, only a very small amount should be put on the foam roller at a time. Before rolling the paint onto your floor, you can remove any excess by rolling it off onto a paper towel first.
Make any necessary adjustments to the stenciled areas using a small craft brush.
After all of the paint has been allowed to dry completely, apply a coat of satin-finish Varathane polyurethane to act as a sealant. A high-gloss sealer is not something I would recommend using because of how slippery it is.
A foam paint roller and at least two coats of polyurethane are required to shield the underlying paint from damage. You also have the option of applying it with a brush made of foam.
ADDITIONAL TILE FINISHING TECHNIQUES
There are different types of paint, in addition to chalk paint, that can be used to decorate floor tile.
After cleaning the tile, scuff sanding it, applying a primer such as this one, and then painting it with enamel, as Julie Blanner did here, is the recommended procedure.
To refinish the tile, you must first clean it, then scuff sand it, and last use a tile refinishing kit such as this one. It’s a two-part epoxy paint mixture that worked really well for me when I applied it to the tub of my camper.
HOW TO APPLY A SEALANT COATING TO PAINTED FLOOR TILES
I believe that it is of the utmost significance to coat your painted tiles with polyurethane and then seal them.
This is a tough and long-lasting clear coat that will protect your paint from flaking and damage for a longer period of time (if at all). In this phase, I favor using products from the Varathane brand.
HOW TO CLEAN PAINTED FLOOR TILES
Tile floors that have been coated and sealed are simple to clean. When I clean this floor, I use a mop and an all-purpose cleaner, just as I do when I clean the other flooring in my home. If there is any residue that is adhered on, I would advise you to scrape it with caution using anything sharp or metallic. To prevent scratching the flooring, it is advised that you use tools made of plastic or other soft materials.
HOW LONG DO YOU BELIEVE PAINTED FLOOR TILES WILL LAST? DO PAINTED FLOOR TILES LAST?
Since May of this year, I’ve had my painted floor tile, and it continues to look fantastic. There is no need for peeling or lifting, and it maintains its youthful appearance even after many years. If the surface is properly prepared, high-quality paint is utilized, and the tile is properly sealed, in my opinion, the majority of painted tile should be able to withstand many years of use. If the floor is in a high-traffic location that will experience a lot of wear and tear over time, you should probably think about having it resealed once per year or two.
ARE YOU ABLE TO DO THIS IN A ZONE WITH A LOT OF TRAFFIC?
The location of my painted floor tile, which is in a low-traffic area, is most likely one of the reasons why it continues to look so excellent after all this time.
Although I do not have painted floors in a high-traffic area, I do know that my friend Dale, who blogs at The Dale on Life, has painted the tiles in her bathroom, and you can read her comments on the topic right here.
The last time I checked, she had already painted the flooring in her bathroom for more than a year, and it has held up.
IS IT POSSIBLE THAT I MAY ALSO PAINT THE TILE BACKSPLASHES? COUNTERTOP?
You can paint the tile on a kitchen or bathroom countertop or backsplash by using the same procedure. You can also use this method. Painting the existing tile on an older backsplash is a more cost-effective and time-efficient alternative to totally replacing the tile with new tile.
DO YOU RECOMMEND THAT I USE MY WOOD STOVE ON PAINTED TILES INSTEAD?
Many of you have inquired as to whether or not I use my wood stove, which is situated on my painted tile, and whether or not the tile still complies with the relevant building codes.
Since I DO NOT USE THIS STOVE, and it is located in my work studio, I did not give any thought to how the paint may influence the fire code.
If you have any intention of painting the tile that is located around a stove or fireplace that you use, you should get the advice of an expert first to verify that the finish you choose is heat resistant.
It is possible that I will have to either remove the old wood stove from my studio or replace the tiling if we ever decide to sell our property (which is not something we have any plans to do in the near future).
